WhatsApp added a Reverse Google Image Search feature to their popular mobile messaging app in the battle against fake news, reported WABetaInfo.
Currently available on Android’s Google Play Beta Program, when the update goes live, WhatsApp and Google hope to reduce the dissemination of disinformation campaigns through social media.
Users can use Google Search to search their messages for similar images, and find a match, or view the metadata of the image if no match is found.
The Internet and social media have growing issues with misleading propaganda through the use of fake and misleading quotes next to authentic images.
WhatsApp will not have access to the images within their messages, although Google will have to process the image upon searching.
